Cheshire Oset Cup 2019, Round 7, Report & Video Link
The final round of the 2019, 2 Machs Motorcycles, Cheshire, Oset Cup took place, on November 17th, under clear skies at Nant Ucha Farm, nr Llangollen. Always a popular venue for the series, with streams, slippery banks, roots and almost everything else to challenge the youth competitors in this all-electric championship.
Edwyn James took his 6th win of the series in the Expert class to take the championship honours. A great ride just losing 6 marks for the day. Section 4’s slippery turn took a good few marks on the day from many! Lucy Baker had one of her best rides of the season in second place on 24 marks. With young Zach Reynolds, another big improver for the year taking the final podium spot on 26 marks. Dempsey Pickup had an uncharacteristic 4th place but did enough to cement his second place in the series after stepping up from his Intermediate championship win in 2018.
The C class inters was a close run race with Afon Poole taking the win on the day and the Championship title, with a loss of 25. Section three was the tester for the inters, a run through the heavily flowing stream followed by a U-turn and straight onto a rocky, slippery incline to the finish cards. Afon and good mate Charlie Manship tied at the top with the win being decided on most 1’s lost as the lads had the same number of cleans!! Reuban Rustage finished third on the day, just three marks down on the Afon and Charlie, securing second place in the championship standings.
Sammy Ashton returned to the series for the first time in round 6, with a C class novice second place. He followed that up with a win on Sunday, dropping just 2 marks. Micheal Thomas followed on 6 marks, and took the championship win too, a good low score considering the slippery conditions. Cerys Good finished her final electric trial in third place, but second in the 2019 series, a regular in the championship who will be missed and we wish her all the best for the future.
The D class Inters win went to another good ride from one of the 2019 big improvers, George Jones has built all season, a confident rider who looks to go far as he steps up to the Expert class for 2020. 14 marks dropped on day gave him the class win and second place in the series. Indeed the class championship ended up a close call with Rylan Pickup winning the series by just one point from George. Rylan has either won or finished second in all of the other rounds this season but things didn’t go to plan on Sunday. A 38 point drop and 6th place was enough to get the job done though. Rylan will now move up to the Expert class too as the lads look to carry on the fun into 2020. The ever smiling Dyfan Smith equalled his best finish of the season securing second on the day, 20 marks lost, and took third place in the series. Ted Jones finished in the final podium spot just one mark behind Dyfan on 21, well done!
Ben Whitehouse won the D class novices with a clean sweep, no mean feat given the slippery camber on section 5, which saw some spectacular wipe outs for some! Winning the day just wasn’t quite enough to take the title for Ben, finishing in second by just two points less than the 2019 champion Dexter Steele, a single dab all day for both Dexter and Luca Lanzi, on the same section,on the same lap, meant that the lads finished in joint second place. Dexter took a deserved championship win and now steps up to the inters championship for 2020. Harry Astbury, another one of the big improvers for 2019 took fourth place on the day with just a 2 mark loss, this gave him a well earned third place in the title chase. This class has been one of the closest all season, with just a few marks separating the top six, or sometime more, Sunday’s trials was no different with Sam Jones finishing 5th on 3 marks, followed by Charlie Brookfield, in 6th on just 5 marks!
Ben James was the only E class rider to take on the inters route. An excellent ride followed, 35 marks dropped, a low score considering the severity of the course for a 5 year old!! Surely an upcoming star of the future.
Jay Hanmer took a clean sweep of wins in the 2019 E class novice championship. 18 marks dropped on the day, the camber on section 5 took 8 of those losses!! Charlie O’Reilly followed Jay home to take second on the day and in the series on 46 marks. Nye Pughe rode in his first Cheshire Oset Cup and promptly took home the final podium spot on 55 marks lost.
So the 6th year of the all-electric championship comes to a close. Well done to all involved, riders, parents, observers and all, thanks for making the championship the fun event that it is. Great to see the kids enjoying riding their bikes, learning from each other and improving.
The series is set to continue for 2020 with a 5 round all-electric championship already scheduled. Alongside this we will also be running two novice/beginner trials for the young and old, petrol and electric. We feel this will give the electric youth riders a much needed stepping stone into adult trials. The Frodsham club plan to run another 4 (plus our 2) of these types of trial next year too. Dates have been set and will be posted up shortly.
